Digital Technology – teachers get ready!


​With the Digital Technologies curriculum being implemented into our classrooms over the next few years, the High School  Digital Technology teachers have offered Digital Technologies workshops for Primary Educators over the last term. The learnings were structured around 4 focus areas. The first used the Lego NXT and EVO Mindstorm kits, using a number of motors and sensors. The second session accessed the world-wide “Hour of Code” movement to highlight just a few of the many online coding resources available. Parents would be familiar with a range of different themes (Minecraft, Plants v Zombies, Frozen), catering to a wide range of student interests. Session three aimed to provide solutions to the question of “What happens if we don’t have computers?” Origami was used as a unique way to introduce the basic concepts behind flowcharts, whilst the main activity revolved around the problem of making a drink and building a flowchart that would explain each step.

The final session brought the teacher learners back to the computers to learn about the ”Scratch” program. Year 8 student, Fletcher Pascoe, demonstrated his Scratch game that he created in class earlier this year. His project taught the user some Italian through controlling a goalkeeper stopping a soccer ball scoring a goal. If the ball scored, the program would count upwards in Italian from 1 to 20. If the user missed, a simple question in Italian was to be answered.

This term the High School is offering Digi Tech sessions to primary school students. We are hoping to encourage students to foster their own interest in coding as well as give the teachers some extra ideas on activities they can run. Plans are also underway for the development of a district coding club and from there, who knows!
