Building bridges

12/09/2014

Year 7 Most Efficient Bridge Winners Annie Zhong and Kira Young.

On Tuesday 2nd and Wednesday 3rd September 2014 over 200 Year 6 and 7 students from the Granite Belt Community of State Schools converged at the Stanthorpe State High School Stadium for the 11th annual Spaghetti Bridge Competition.

This activity is a Technology department (Manual Arts & HPE) initiative. Over Term 3 students have been working in small groups, researching, designing and building a bridge made only from spaghetti and hot glue.  Students also produced a design folio.  54 bridges were created and brought to the High School for testing.  Each bridge was weighed and then hooked up with a bucket into which the students carefully poured more and more damp sand.  Certificates were awarded in three categories:

1. Most efficient bridge (the lightest bridge to support the most weight)

2. Most aesthetic bridge.

3. Lightest bridge to support 500g.

The winning students are listed below.  During the day, students also participated in sporting activities.  Students enjoyed spaghetti bolognaise for lunch provided by the Yr 12 Hospitality students.

This project engaged students in meaningful learning and was an important social activity to aid in their transition from Year 6 and 7 to High School.

Our thanks go to McDonald’s restaurant who has supplied vouchers for all participating students over the 11 years of the competition.
